A Foothold in the Rock
First, in English:
A tiny fern, a big contribution to soil formation. 🌱
Ceterach officinarum (syn. Asplenium ceterach) has found a place to grow in a narrow crack between rocks in the Sierra Norte de Sevilla, Spain.
🌿 Pioneer plants like this fern can colonize exposed rock surfaces and small fissures, where water and fine particles accumulate.
🪨 Their roots can gradually widen cracks, while biological activity and organic compounds contribute to mineral weathering.
🌱 As plant remains and other organic matter accumulate, they help create the first conditions for soil development. Soil formation often begins with just a little life finding a foothold in the rock.
