Where the Mountains Meet the Sky
First, in English:
Sierra Nevada rises above the historic Albaicín neighbourhood of Granada, with the imposing Mulhacén (3,479 m), the highest peak in the Iberian Peninsula, standing out on the horizon. Its rugged relief, shaped by steep slopes, deep valleys and contrasting mountain orientations, creates an extraordinary diversity of environmental conditions. Altitude, exposure and water availability produce a mosaic of bioclimatic environments, ranging from Mediterranean mountain landscapes to the harsh conditions of the alpine belt, where low temperatures, snow and a short growing season determine the distribution of vegetation. Few places illustrate so clearly how topography shapes climate, ecosystems and landscape over relatively short distances.
