First in English:

Rocks may look solid and unchanging, but time and temperature have other plans! 🌡️ Repeated heating and cooling cause minerals to expand and contract, generating stresses that can gradually widen existing fractures and contribute to rock breakdown. This process, known as thermal weathering, is particularly relevant where rocks experience significant temperature fluctuations.

Lichens and mosses add another layer to this story. 🌱 These organisms colonize exposed rock surfaces, retain moisture and contribute to weathering through biological and chemical interactions. Their presence also creates small sheltered environments where water and temperature fluctuations can further influence the rock.

Little by little, fractures grow, rock fragments loosen, and the landscape changes. Physical weathering is a slow process, but its effects are written all over the rock!
