Little Ice Age . . .

Two centuries ago, Alpine glaciers advanced well below their current positions. Their advance was slow but unstoppable, so that the ice sometimes advanced over forests and destroyed hamlets, as happened here at Gorner Glacier. Throughout the Alps, moraines clearly mark this former extent of glaciers. The larch, here just beginning to turn yellow, is often the first tree to return to the desolated landscape.
