Southern Foehn in the Swiss Alps
Martin Wegmann
University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland
Looking south over the Lötschen valley at the northern faces of the local mountains, we can see the clouds accumulating at the orographic barrier that is the mountain range, then dissolving while crossing or flowing over the obstacle. That day the flow direction was from south to north with precipitation on the southern flanks of the Alps and MeteoSwiss communicated high wind warnings for high alpine locations.
