Darong Hot Spring, Zhongba County, in Xizang (Tibet)

by Ping Zhao

The Darong Hot Spring is located in the Gangdise Mountains on the Qinghai–Xizang Plateau at an elevation of 4,832 meters above sea level. It has six spring vents. The maximum temperature at the spring outlets reaches 83.4°C. The water is of the NaHCO₃ type, with the SiO₂ concentration of 86.5 ppm, and the estimated temperature of the geothermal reservoir exceeds 100°C at depth. The helium isotope ratio of the hot spring gases is 0.02 Rc/Ra, indicating that the helium component is derived from the decay of radioactive elements in crustal rocks.
