From ice to the sea
by Kay Helfricht, Institute for Interdisciplinary Mountain Research (IGF), Austrian Acadamy of Sciences (ÖAW), Innsbruck, Austria
Engabreen is an outlet glacier of the Svartisen ice cap in northern Norway. The view from the glacier tongue towards the fjord presents several runoff features which meltwater has to pass. Beginning with the channalized water in wild mountain streams, a lake formed in the 1920's ponds the meltwater before it is released to the sea nearby.
