Canyon of Te Wai A Korokio (The Roaring Meg) at the Roaring Meg Lookout point
The Canyon of Te Wai a Korokio (Roaring Meg) was carved predominantly by fluvial erosion of the Otago Schist, exploiting pre-existing fractures and joints in the bedrock. Its present-day relief also reflects the tectonic uplift and faulting of Central Otago, which created steep, structurally controlled slopes subsequently incised by the Roaring Meg stream.
