So long, and thanks for all the fish
Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere - Franz Josef Glacier retreat in February 2026.
Kā Roimata o Hine Hukatere (Franz Josef Glacier) is undergoing marked retreat, exposing newly deglaciated terrain and progressively extending its proglacial foreland. The retreat promotes rapid geomorphological adjustment, including paraglacial slope modification, sediment redistribution and the development of new meltwater channels and depositional forms. In February 2026, the glacier terminus and surrounding foreland provided a clear example of these ongoing glacial and paraglacial processes.
