Mountain Oasis - Oman
by Silvia Favaro, Università Milano Bicocca, Milano, Italy
The ancient Wakan village is located 2000 meters above the sea level, in a remote valley carved by Wadi Mistral. This mountain village is surrounded by an oasis farmed using terrace agriculture planted with fruit trees including pomegranates, grapes, figs, apricots, olives and peaches. The entire oasis is crossed by a 700 step staircase which follow a narrow falaj irrigation system. The water comes from an impermeable rock layer within the Jebel Akhdar, Western Hajar Mountains.
