A series of seismites in the Lisan Formation, pre-Dead Sea lake deposits

The Lisan Formation was deposited in a lake during the last glacial period over a section of the Dead Sea Fault. The laminas, which represent seasonal deposition, were preserved exceptionally well until earthquakes associated with fault slip deformed the bottom sediments. The series of deformed strata (=seismites) provides a ~50-kyr-long paleoseismic record. The photo shows a cliff in the Holocene incision near the Dead Sea that exposes a cluster of slumps interpreted as seismites.
