Seismite in the Lisan Formation, pre Dead Sea lake deposits

The Lisan Formation was deposited in a lake during the last glacial period over a section of the Dead Sea Fault. The laminas, which represent seasonal deposition, were preserved exceptionally well until earthquakes associated with fault slip deformed the bottom sediments. The series of deformed strata (=seismites) provides a ~50-kyr-long paleoseismic record. The photo shows an example of a seismite.
