Pillow lava
by Jana Eichel, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany
Pillow lava exposed in the Caldera de Taburiente, La Palma, Canary Islands. The pillow lava was produced during the initial submarine period in which the island La Palma was formed. The lava from this eruption was covered by younger eruptions (Garafia and Taburiente volcanos) but has been exposed by deep fluvial erosion at the basis of the Caldera de Taburiente.
