Gole dell‘ Alcantara
by Wolfgang Fraedrich, Hamburg, Germany
Gole dell 'Alcantara is a system of gorges in the course of the river Alcantara in eastern Sicily with a depth of up to 40 m and a width of up to 5 m. The gorges are the result of intensive deep erosion by flowing water in hard, several thousand years old basalt rock, caused by the solidification of lava columns. In the field of Gole dell 'Alcantara there is a botanical and geological park, whose visit is worthwhile. A large car park offers many cars place, but the area is in the high season usually overcrowded. The gorges are located south of the road 185 between Taormina and Randazzo about 5 km south-east from Francavilla.
