Purple haze over the city

This photograph was taken in Seville on 10 August 2026 at 21:46, just 25 minutes after sunset. The last daylight was still fading from the sky, but the smoke from the Niebla wildfire in Huelva had already transformed the appearance of the evening. 🔥🌫️
The fire had started on 6 August in Niebla, Huelva, about 60 km from Seville, and four days later its smoke plume was clearly visible over the city. Instead of the deep blue normally associated with twilight, the sky appeared dark and hazy, with pink, mauve, violet and reddish tones concentrated around the horizon. 🌇
The smoke altered the way sunlight passed through the atmosphere, scattering and absorbing part of the light and giving the sunset a muted, almost surreal appearance. The effect was especially striking against the artificial lights of the city, which stand out beneath a sky coloured by a wildfire burning dozens of kilometres away. 🚍✨
The photograph is therefore more than a cityscape at sunset. It captures how the effects of a wildfire can extend far beyond the area actually burned. Smoke can travel considerable distances, reduce visibility and alter air quality, while also transforming something as familiar as the colour of an evening sky.

Hice esta fotografía en Sevilla el 10 de agosto de 2026 a las 21:46 h, apenas 25 minutos después de la puesta de sol. Todavía quedaba algo de luz en el cielo, pero el humo del incendio de Niebla, en Huelva, había cambiado por completo el aspecto del anochecer. 🔥🌫️
El fuego se había iniciado el 6 de agosto en Niebla (Huelva), a unos 60 km de Sevilla, y cuatro días después su columna de humo ya era claramente apreciable sobre la ciudad. En lugar del azul oscuro habitual del crepúsculo, el cielo aparecía cubierto por una especie de velo oscuro y, cerca del horizonte, adquiría tonos rosados, malvas, violetas y rojizos. 🌇
El humo modificaba la forma en que la luz solar atravesaba la atmósfera, dispersando y absorbiendo parte de ella y dando al atardecer un aspecto apagado, extraño y casi surrealista. El contraste con las luces artificiales de la ciudad hacía que la escena resultara todavía más llamativa: las luces de los vehículos y de las calles destacaban bajo un cielo teñido por un incendio que estaba ocurriendo a decenas de kilómetros. 🚍✨
La fotografía muestra así que los efectos de un incendio forestal no terminan donde acaba la superficie quemada. El humo puede recorrer grandes distancias, reducir la visibilidad y modificar la calidad del aire, pero también cambiar algo tan cotidiano como el color de un atardecer.
