The burning red (after prescribed fire)
Antonio Jordán
University of Seville, Sevilla, Spain
The image shows the upper layers of a sandy soil profile below banksia woodland in Kings Park Botanic Gardens, Perth (WA, Australia), after a prescribed fire. The dark layer corresponds to a cluster of burned banksia roots. Prolonged smoldering below the soil surface contributed to produce a reddish layer of iron oxides.
