Overhanging cliff on Rügen
by David Tanner, Leibniz Institute for Applied Geophysics (LIAG), Hannover, Germany
The weak chalk cliffs of the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea are constantly under attack by the sea. Because the erosion is stronger at the base of the cliff, it steepens until it overhangs. Eventually the cliffs collapse - a danger for anyone walking along the narrow beach.
