Sierra de San Bartolomé, Tarifa, Spain
by Antonio Jordán, University of Seville, Sevilla, Spain
Although the mountains of Algeciras have relatively low altitude (the highest elevation is El Algibe peak,1092 masl), the relief is very marked, causing large micro-climate variations within a short distance. In addition, the elevations are acidic Islands (siliceous sandstone) surrounded by a basic sea (clays and calcareous marls). All this produces a wide variety of soils. The peak of the Sierra de San Bartolomé (422 masl) in Tarifa, around 2800 m of the coast is shown in the picture.
