Coarse roots of Retama raetam being denuded by wind erosion

by Vincent Felde, University of Hannover, Germany, Hannover, Germany

The plant mound (nebkha) of this perennial shrub (Retama raetam) is blown of by wind and the root system is denuded due to the absence of biological soil crusts that protect the soil from wind erosion.
