Where Waves Carve the Mountain
by Vibhaw Shrivastava, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel
Framed by white limestone cliffs, the Mediterranean Sea opens into a vast blue horizon at Rosh HaNikra, the northwestern edge of Israel. Here, the sea meets the mountains in a striking geological encounter, where wave action continuously shapes and carves the coastal rock. The natural grotto-like opening reveals a dynamic interface between land and sea, where erosion, salt weathering, and hydrodynamic forces sculpt the coastline over time. Beyond the rocky foreground, the open sea stretches under a clear sky, reflecting stable atmospheric conditions and the subtle movement of marine currents. This scene captures the ongoing dialogue between geology and ocean processes at one of the region’s most distinctive coastal landscapes.
