Falling Leaves, setting Sun
by Harald Crepaz, Institute for Alpine Environment, Eurac Research, Bozen, Italy
In this autumn-colored panorama taken from the Koralpe (Austria), the Karawanks stretch along the Slovenian-Austrian border. Formed during the ongoing second phase of the Alpine orogeny since the Eocene epoch, these peaks bear witness to the immense geological forces at play. The pressure between the European and Adriatic tectonic plates, combined with the rotation of the latter, caused a lateral shift of up to 250 km along the Periadriatic Seam, resulting in unique "flower structures" that characterize the region.
