Salt marshes in Northern Germany at sunset
Salt marshes are placed in the transition zone between sea and land. They are naturally open grasslands with habitat-specific plants and can be rich in flowers, specialised plants and generalists adapted to disturbed regimes, or they can be dominated by a few grass species. Overall, diversity increases from the regularly flooded pioneer zone to the rarely submerged upper salt marsh belt.
