Elbe Sandstone Mountains, Saxony Germany
by Michaël Pons, Gfz, Potsdam, Germany
The Elbe Sandstones Mountains in Saxony are a mountain range in South Eastern Germany, renown as climbing spots and touristic location. The picture portrays the Bastei Rock formation, located in the Saxon Switzerland National Park overhanging the Elbe river. Here, a 600 meters thick succession of Cretaceous marine sandstones is outcropping, the interplay between tectonic forces, chemical and mechanical weathering resulted in a variety of intricate morphologies and unique shapes. I could not resist to make my own investigation while I was going to Prague to spend some holidays.
