Valle de la Luna, Atacama Desert, Chile
by Catarina Guerreiro, University of Bremen, Bremen, Germany
Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) is an impressive landscape that looks like the surface of the moon, located in the Cordillera de la Sal (Salt Chain), in the Atacama Desert. It is marked by the presence of various formations of stone and sand which have been carved by wind and precipitation, and covered by a vast white layer that originates from the extensive dry salt lakes existing in this region.
