A fragile equilibrium

Group of goethite acicular crystals grown on top of a calcite scalenohedron. This sample is part of a calcite vein cutting Paleogenic basalts from the Lessini Mts. (Southern Alps, Italy). This image is produced by stacking 34 photos taken at different focal depths. Field of view is ca. 2 mm.
