Oceanographic measurements without oceanographic equipment

by Florian Greil, Alfred Wegener Institute, Bremerhaven, Germany

The challenge is to perform science with limited equipment. Water samples are usually taken with a winch, but on this Russian vessel we sucessfully used the crane to operate the CTD (conductivity, temperature, density) logger. To capture both crane and instrument without a fisheye lens, I had to turn my camera. In order not to force you to turn your monitor, some slight image manipulation was applied to make the horizon horizontal and to blur out the appearing white corner.
