Gorkha Nepal, Mw 7.8 Earthquake - Human Seismometers
by David Mencin
On 25 April, 2015, a large violent earthquake of Mw 7.8 struck in central Nepal. This video shows the motion of a local GPS station (in map view) versus the people's reaction in Kathmandu. You will see the arrival of the earthquake P-waves as a high-frequency vibration (notice the birds) and then the back and forth sloshing as the large S-waves interact with the basin sediments that underlie the city of Kathmandu.
