Close up of Hraunfossar
by Martine van der Ploeg, Wageningen University, Wageningen, the Netherlands
Hraunfossar are the waterfalls of the lava field Hallmundarhraun, and for hydrogeologic point of view a prime example of fracture flow. Instead of a plunging river, the water from the Langjökull glacier suddenly appears at the Hraunfossar over a length of 900 m., thus providing a habitat for many small trees and plants.
