Weathering "terraces"
Samuele Papeschi
University of Pisa, Pisa, Italy
Sulfur rich waters flowing over weathered pyrite - hematite bodies at Topinetti beach, Island of Elba. These deposits have been quarried for centuries since ancient Roman times. Production ceased only in the 50s, but acidic waters still flow out of the mines into the Tyrrhenian Sea. (Width of view: 15 cm)
