Daily Journey for Water. Daily Absence from School. (Tanzania)

by Joel Gill, King's College London/Geology for Global Development, London, United Kingdom

Each day, instead of going to school, this girl joins thousands of others across Tanzania in collecting water for her family. The source of her water was not a protected tap, pump or spring however, but a pool of contaminated, unsafe water. Water that will impact her education, health, future income generation and gender equality. It was the only choice available to her. It doesn't have to be like this. Geoscience, some basic engineering and approximately €2500 could help to provide a clean, safe water supply. How can our geoscience networks, institutions and organisations help to bring positive, sustainable change? It's a question that each of us should be asking, and addressing with urgency.
