Artificial caverns
In the face of Matera village, small caverns are located on 200 m height hill. They were excavated by monks starting from natural formed holes of soft rocks. They complete the ancient full image of the village and remind us where human used to live many years ago.
Matera was declared as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993
