Landmannalaugar painted mountains
Landmannalaugar, Fjallabak Nature Reserve (Iceland), 2023.
Iceland's Landmannalaugar, nestled within the Torfajökull Caldera, boasts a rare geological tapestry.
When Torfajökull erupted in 1477 it created Iceland's largest area of silicic extrusive rocks with an exceptionally high proportion of rhyolite. This created a striking landscape where multicolored mountains, lava fields, and geothermal pools paint a scene of volcanic artistry.
The name Landmannalaugar (literally, the People's Pools) was given because of the abundance of natural geothermal pools located in the area.
