Withstanding the Natural Forces
by Luis Samaniego, Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research, Leipzig, Germany
This stunning natural rock formation near Llanes, Asturias in northern Spain is a remarkable illustration of the powerful impact of weathering on the Earth's crust. Despite millions of years of exposure to the natural forces of erosion, this geological wonder has displayed remarkable resilience. The formation, which resembles a magnificent arch, has also become an ecosystem in its own right, providing a habitat for seagulls. It's no wonder it's known as "El Castro de las Gaviotas" in Spanish!
