The calm after the September storm
Manarola is a small village in the municipality of Riomaggiore (Liguria, northern Italy) and is part of the famous Cinque Terre National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The villages are interconnected by paths, trains and boats, as the mountain roads are too dangerous for cars.
For this reason, many walking trails run throughout the park, with the most popular being the Sentiero Azzurro ('Azure Trail'), which connects the five villages. However, due to the instability of the environment, landslides often cause portions of the paths to be closed: in September 2021, the section from Riomaggiore to Manarola, called Via dell'Amore ('Love Walk'), was closed.
