Erupting Rainbow Volcano
by Velio Coviello, Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, Bolzano, Italy
Villarrica Volcano is a snow-capped stratovolcano composed of a late Pleistocene caldera with an internal late Holocene cone. Villarrica Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in South America and it represents a serious thread for the touristic towns of Villarrica and Pucón. Since October 2022, the volcano has been the site of gas explosions and seismic events, with pillars of fire up to 200 meters high.
