Zabriskie Point is located in California, within the Death Valley National Park. The rocks in the picture are part of the Furnace Creek Formation and are mainly composed by 5 Ma old clay-rich sediments, remnant of an ancient lake. Dry and extensively eroded soft terrains, characterized by minimal vegetation and lack of soil as the one at Zabriskie Point, are calld badlands.
