- para-gneiss is derived from sedimentary rocks.
- ortho-gneiss is derived from igneous rocks.
- the difference in the field outcropping between para-gneiss and ortho-gneiss is that para-gneiss is leucocratic to mesocratic "light-colored", but ortho-gneiss is melanocratic to hyper-melanic "dark-colored".
