A Frozen Time Capsule
It felt like time is not passing here or just really slowly. Spending two days and one night inside a permafrost cave while it was midsummer outside has been a beautiful experience. The shapes that the ice had sculptured were endless and took our breath away. At the same time I could feel how fragile this whole place is while lying in my sleeping bag and listening to the gentle sounds all around.
The "Schwarzmooskogel-Höhlensystem" is located in the "Totes Gebirge" in Austria and consists of 17 individual caves. It has a length of around 140km and its overall depth is 1125 meters. It was first discovered in 1929 by Ausseer scientists.
