Kelvin Helmholtz instabilities at the tropopause

by Peter Hoor

The image was taken during a scientific flight with the german research aircraft HALO during the WISE mission (wave-driven isentropic exchange) in September 2017 over Ireland. The characteristic cloud pattern indicates the occurrence of turbulence in the tropopause region above a so-called warm conveyor belt which transports air masses from low altitudes up to 10km altitude.
