The bridge between science and nature
by Carsten Spisla, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, Kiel, Germany
In science, it often gets difficult when it comes to transferring laboratory results on complex natural environments. Large-scale off shore mesocosm experiments here form a valuable tool to bridge this gap in marine science. They enclose a large amount of water, and provide the opportunity to monitor and/or manipulate this complex ecosystem. In this case, water was enclosed in an upwelling area off Lima (Peru), in order to investigate possible effects of climate related changes in the oxigen minimum zone.
