Dunes from Tarifa
Antonio Jordán
University of Seville, Sevilla, Spain
Valdevaqueros beach is located in Tarifa, in the strait of Gibraltar (southern Spain). The western extreme of the beach is occupied by an extensive dune formed during the 40's of the twentieth century, when attempts to prevent sand movement that threatened to engulf military installations led to the formation of a large dune that was later fixed by a pine reforestation. The dune is still active.
At present, the dune and neighbour virgin areas are menaced by urban development.
