Light and shadow - dune field at White Sands National Monument
This picture was taken just before dusk at the White Sands National Monument in New Mexico, USA. This fascinating dune field originates from eroded gypsum deposits in Lake Lucero, an ephemeral lake located in the Tularosa Basin. The White Sands dune field covers an area of more than 700 square kilometers. The local fauna has adapted to this unique habitat. For example, the bleached earless lizard at White Sands is of much lighter color than its relatives in the surrounding desert. For people living in the area, White Sands is frequently used for recreational activities, such as hiking or – specifically at White Sands – sledding down the dunes.
