Bird's view of Lakes Trebecchi
by Antonello Provenzale, Institute of Geosciences and Earth Resources, Pisa, Italy
Above the tree line, small lakes punctuate the vegetated, rocky landscape of the Nivolet high plain in the Gran Paradiso National Park, Italy. Most of these lakes are naturally fishless, but alien fish (brook trout, Salvelinus fontinalis) was introduced in the sixties and seventies. The arrival of this alien fish drastically changed the lake ecosystems. A recent EU Life project on active ecosystem management attempted at restoring the previous fishless conditions.
