Close-up sinkhole at the Dead Sea
by Djamil Al-Halbouni, GEOMAR - Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, Kiel, Germany
This close-up image taken by a balloon reveals the internal structure of a drying sinkhole at the eastern dead sea. Semi-circular cracks from neighboring holes and inner slump-like tilted blocks reveal the evolution of this natural hazard phenomenon in the muddy former lake-bed. Leftovers of the drying water infill are salt and prevailing minerals.
