Burnt roots
by Anna Kühnel
The Meadow Fire along the Merced River in the Yosemite National park burnt an area of about 19 km² in September 2014. In the last century fires have often been surpressed. Currently, naturally occuring fires are again recognized as an essential part of the ecosystem. The Meadow Fire did not only burn the understory vegetation, but also some of the tree roots which left large holes in the soil.
