Sheath Folds in Salt

These elliptical traces of the beds in the salt show that fold axes are plunging into the wall on the left and plunging out of the wall on the right. This fold axis behaviour is called "curivlinear" and it is typical of sheath folds. They, in turn, are indicative of high strain. Photo taken in the Morsleben salt mine. Scale 20cm.
