The Architecture of Relief
by Debayan Chatterjee, Freie Universität Berlin, Berlin, Germany
Hathi Parvat ("Elephant Peak") in the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve stunningly reveals the interplay between tectonic uplift and surface erosion. Steep rock faces and deeply incised gullies reflect sustained exhumation and mass wasting, while perennial snow persists on the highest elevations. The landscape captures a transient balance where rock is continuously raised and simultaneously removed, shaping the dramatic relief of the High Himalaya.
