Between Persistence and Retreat
by Deniz Vural
In the Swiss Alps, glaciers persist as both witnesses and responders to climate change. The flowing ice, carved into crevasses and channels, contrasts with the exposed rock slopes that reveal ongoing retreat. This landscape represents a dynamic interface where atmospheric warming directly reshapes Earth’s surface processes. Beyond their visual grandeur, alpine glaciers are essential freshwater reservoirs and sensitive indicators of environmental change, making their evolution a key focus of geoscientific research.
