Alone against instability

by Daniele Penna, University of Florence, Firenze, Italy

A lonely pine tree stands on the sloping rim of Bryce Canyon, Utah, USA.

Bryce Canyon formed over 50 million years of tectonic uplift and intense water, wind, and ice erosion that created the famous "hoodoos". The area is also home to different pines that survive in this harsh and arid environment through different strategies. This young individual of Colorado Pinyon (Pinus edulis) fights against steep slopes and dry soils through deep root systems that access water, allowing it to tolerate droughts, and relying on symbiotic relationships with birds for seed dispersal.
