Calving aftermath at the Perito Moreno glacier

by Giulia Cozzani, Laboratory of Physics and Chemistry of the Environment and Space (LPC2E), Orléans, France

An iceberg overturns in the waters in front of Perito Moreno Glacier, Patagonia, Argentina, immediately after a calving event. As it rolls, its darker surface briefly submerges and re-emerges, revealing fresh blue ice. This dense, compact glacier ice appears deep blue because pressure increases the size of the ice crystals, lengthening the path of light through the ice and enhancing the absorption of the red end of the visible spectrum. The motion highlights both the dynamism of calving glaciers and the striking beauty of newly exposed ice.
